Orthodontic Emergency Help
If something breaks, becomes loose, or starts to irritate, simple temporary steps often help until we can see you. Here is practical guidance for common orthodontic problems.
First aid for orthodontics
Stay calm, protect soft tissues, and contact us
Most orthodontic problems are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. The main goals are to reduce irritation, prevent further damage, and contact the practice on the next working day.
Common problems and temporary solutions
These suggestions are intended as short-term help until your appointment. If you have swelling, trauma, bleeding, or severe pain, contact us directly or seek urgent dental or medical care.
Removable appliance
If a removable appliance breaks or becomes painful, stop wearing it until we can assess it.
- Do not force a broken or distorted removable appliance back into place.
- If an outer bow or loose band irritates your cheek, cover the area with orthodontic wax or sugar-free chewing gum.
- If a loose band has come out completely and is not attached to fixed braces, keep it safe and bring it to your next appointment.
- Contact DenCos on the next working day so we can decide whether repair or replacement is needed.
Fixed braces
Loose brackets, poking wires, and displaced parts are common reasons for emergency orthodontic visits.
- Cover a loose bracket or irritating area with orthodontic wax or sugar-free chewing gum to protect your cheek or tongue.
- If a wire end is sticking out, you may gently try to bend it back with the back of a spoon. Only trim it yourself if you feel confident and can do so safely.
- If a bracket or band becomes loose, stop wearing elastics until we have checked the appliance.
- Call DenCos on the next working day to arrange repair.
Retainer
Retention appliances can also irritate or loosen, especially when a bonded wire starts to lift.
- If a retainer wire pokes your tongue, cover the sharp area with sugar-free chewing gum or orthodontic wax.
- You may gently try to bend a protruding wire away from the tongue with the back of a spoon.
- If a removable retainer is painful or damaged, leave it out and contact us.
- Bring any loose or broken retainer parts to your appointment.
When you should call us
Not every problem needs same-day treatment, but almost every broken appliance should be reviewed promptly so treatment can continue safely.
- Call sooner if you have significant swelling, bleeding, trauma, or pain that is not manageable with usual pain relief.
- For loose brackets, bands, poking wires, and painful removable appliances, contact us on the next working day.
- If any part comes loose completely, keep it and bring it with you to the appointment whenever possible.
