Understanding dental care rates in the Netherlands
Dental care rates in the Netherlands are set annually by the Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (NZA). These rates apply to all dental practices and ensure transparency and fairness in healthcare pricing.

Official NZA Rates
The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZA) publishes annual rates for all dental treatments. These rates are standardized across the Netherlands and apply to all registered dental practices. You can view the complete rate list on the official NZA website.
Insurance Coverage
Understanding what your insurance covers helps you plan for dental expenses. Coverage varies between basic and supplementary insurance packages.
Basic Health Insurance
For children under 18, basic health insurance covers a broad package of dental care, such as check-ups, tartar removal, fillings and surgical dental care. For adults it covers surgical dental care, X-rays and removable dentures, but not routine check-ups. Orthodontic treatment is in principle not covered by the Dutch basic health insurance: only in cases of a severe (developmental) disorder or abnormality of the mouth may it be reimbursed as special dental care (bijzondere tandheelkundige zorg), regardless of age.
Supplementary Dental Insurance
Supplementary dental insurance (aanvullende verzekering) may cover part of the cost of orthodontic treatment — check this with your insurer in advance. For children under 18, most insurers reimburse €1,000 to €2,500 per child after a waiting period of approximately 12 months. Adults should check their policy for orthodontic benefits, as coverage varies widely between providers.
